When you start working out you’ll usually have multiple gym choices. Unless you live in a small town. The majority of us will have multiple choices though. 24 Hour Fitness, LA Boxing, Gold’s Gym, LA Fitness, Crunch Gym, and many other chains and small gyms. So how do you choose which gym to go with? What are the pros and cons to each?

In our town we have a few to choose from with the two main gyms being 24 Hour Fitness and LA Boxing. I am a member of both but currently only go to LA Boxing. Why? Well, here are the pros and cons that I see. (Keep in mind that this is specific to the gyms in my town and may not be applicable to your local gym since these are nationwide and each facility may be different.)

24 Hour Fitness Gym
Pros Cons
  • Open Long Hours
  • Every workout machine you need
  • All the weights you need
  • Multiples of cardio machines and weights
  • Day care service
  • Multiple classes offered
  • Affordable monthly fee
  • Extremely busy
  • Unfriendly staff / trainers
  • High cost of personal training
  • No classes tailored for men
  • Snobby clientele…lots of meatheads
  • Naked dudes in the bathrooms (they have showers)
  • Most members focus on body-building instead of fitness and strength
LA Boxing Gym
Pros Cons
  • Friendly staff / trainers; willing to offer advice, help, tips.
  • Plenty of heavy bags and boxing training equipment
  • Boxing, kick boxing, and MMA classes for men and women of all ages.
  • Class instructors are actual fighters
  • Less members meaning no wait times for equipment
  • Most members focus on actual fitness and strength instead of body-building
  • Weekend schedule is weak, only open 9-2. Also doesn’t open until 7 am during the week.
  • Double the cost of 24 Hour Fitness
  • Small gym with limited cardio and weight machines (think: hotel gym)
