It was another fabulous day in Southern California so I once again took my workout outdoors.I walked for 35 minutes in the morning and I took a hike for 45 minutes in the afternoon. After my hike I grabbed my dumbbells and started my leg workout. The bottom half of my body has always been more of a “problem” area for me so I focus alot of my workouts on my legs and glutes. I did squats, lunges, calf raises, side leg lifts and glute lifts. I did 3 sets of 12 for each exercise. To end my workout I did 3 sets of 10 push ups and 3 sets of 30 crunches.

Then in the late afternoon I went for a 1 1/2 hour hike with a friend. I stretched and did 3 sets of 30 crunches when I got home. I noticed that I was extremely hungry at the end of the day from all of the cardio the past few days. It was hard not to eat everything in sight.

Webmd.com has a great article about the 7 most effective exercises that you can do. Some of them aren’t very surprising..for example, push-ups. Most articles I’ve read have claimed that the push-up is one of the best exercises you can do. There are so many versions you can do too…some that build chest muscle, some that build back muscle, some work on your triceps, etc. Check out the rest of the exercises from their list below.

1. Walking
2. Interval training
3. Squats
4. Lunges
5. Push-ups
6. Abdominal Crunches
7. Bent-over Row

They also had a good quote at the end of the article which discusses technique and form. It is so true. If you go into some of the meathead gyms like 24 Hour Fitness you’ll see a lot of kids trying to lift ridiculously heavy weights….way more than they can reasonably lift. Why? To look cool. The problem, as suggested below, is that your form suffers and therefore you don’t end up getting the same results.

These seven exercises are excellent, efficient choices, the experts say. But with just about any strength or resistance exercise, says Petersen, the question is not so much whether the exercise works as how well you execute.

The trouble is that poor form can change the whole exercise, putting emphasis or even strain on different areas than intended. This can hurt, rather than help you.
